Today, we head out to Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu with Bobby. A quick visit to the famous Kumamoto castle, built by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa, they encounter a party of very realistically dressed samurai warriors. Following which, the team journeys to the largest shopping street in the city and enjoy a hot bowl of Kumamoto Ramen, some refreshing tea at the Suizen Temple Park, and the famous horse sashimi.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said calls were coming in from residents reporting people being trapped inside houses and buildings. The quake shook the Kumamoto region at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, and several aftershocks soon followed. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a tsunami up to 3 feet in height along the coast west of the epicenter in Kumamoto. The advisory was lifted less than an hour later. The stream side forest and adjacent hills have been left in their primeval state and are home to a dizzying array of plants. One group of plants common to the gorge, especially near the river, are epiphytes - plants that grow on other plants. While mosses and ferns dominate the epiphytic community here, others like clubmosses and orchids can be found as well. This video shows many of the common epiphytes of the gorge. The day it was taken was rainy and cool and at the pe...

Earthquakes in Kyushu Island, Japan were felt in many areas of Japan including mine in Hiroshima. The tremors I felt caused my building to sway noticeably for several minutes on both days that the earthquakes hit. Japan is no stranger to earthquakes, and in fact it is one of the most active regions in the world. Because of this, they have learned to prepare themselves for disaster when it strikes. This includes evacuation points, and several lines of communications and alerts to warn citizens of imminent danger. Now that I am a resident of Japan, I am learning these things first hand. I hope I don't ever have to use the precautionary systems that are in place, but it is reassuring to know that Japan is prepared. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Another day filled with public transportation to get from point A to point B - still on Kyushu Island. Riding on any of Japan's bullet trains or Shinkasen's (the Japanese word for "bullet train") is a delight; plenty of leg space, clean, fast and quiet. But after hours of on and off, it's no wonder Marine Steve and I barely had enough energy to chow down dinner. Welcome now to Kagoshima which became one of our favorite places on Kyushu.

Meet the people and see the sights of this 4-day, 300km bicycle journey.

We made it to Miyazaki thanks to https://www.odigo.travel ! More travel videos on Odigo: https://goo.gl/IETw90 Miyazaki is easily the most beautiful prefecture we've been to so far, and it didn't make it in this video but it's also the prefecture that founded chicken nanban, THE BEST JAPANESE FOOD DISH EVER. Miyazaki is said to produce the best chicken in Japan (which my tastebuds can confirm) because their chickens are free-ranging and healthy. Chicken nanban in Miyazaki is a 10000% ABSOLUTE MUST if you can eat chicken. The places we went in this video are Takachiho Gorge, Aya Teruha suspension bridge, and Udo Jingu. There's so much nature to explore, and because Miyazaki is so far out of the way there aren't as many tourists here as there are in most places in Honshu so you can still g...
Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken) is Japan's southernmost prefecture, consisting of a few dozen, small islands in the southern half of the Nansei Shoto, the island chain which stretches over about one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan. Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island. Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands are considered among the world's most beautiful with coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Consequently, snorkeling and scuba diving are among Okinawa's top attracti...

April 11-13, 2016 (This was before the Kumamoto earthquake on April 16) We took the shinkansen down to Kyushu to visit the small hot spring town Beppu, and then stay at a lovely ryokan in Yufuin. —— Beppu: First we took the Shinkansen (with our JR pass) from Shin-Osaka to Kokura, where we then took the Sonic Express to Beppu station. I think the whole trip took about 4 hours. We used this website to search for the best route: http://www.hyperdia.com/ Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu We stayed at this hotel for 1 night, and we had a pleasant stay. It was quite close to the station and the beach (although it wasn’t beach season yet), and it also had a nice hot spring and good breakfast. The climate is slightly warmer and more tropical than Honshu, and the southern and eastern coasts are regularly battered by typhoons each year.
